That’s a good question. . . . The city assessor ceased complaining about the “burlesque” numbering after 1915, but I couln’t find any evidence that the city had actaually done any thing to remedy the problems. I personally haven’t einspected every street number on the peninsula, but I would hope that the anomolies have been rectified over the past century!

Great essay! After it was abandoned, was all of the renumbering conducted during the centigrade plan reverted, or are there still “anomalies” from the failed experiment on the map?

I stumbled into this bit of information about the market while reading through the old Charleston newspapers a few years ago. Like everyone else, I was unaware of the market’s reception of refugees untill I found the clues in the newspapers and connected the dots. Being a historian is sometimes very much like being a detective!
